The replacement for Her Majesty's Penitentiary — the province's largest building project, running to 2029.
What’s being built
This is the new provincial correctional facility that replaces Her Majesty's Penitentiary in St. John's. Financial close was reached in July 2025 and the build is scheduled to run about 50 months, finishing in the fall of 2029. It is a secure institutional building, so the work is heavy on formwork and cast-in-place concrete, structural steel, electrical and mechanical rough-in, and security systems. For a tradesperson it is the steadiest multi-year job on the northeast Avalon.
